Green Apple is very pleased to be hosting two wonderful writers -- Miranda Mellis and Anna Joy Springer.
Mellis is a San Francisco based fiction writer whose book
None of This is Real was our April selection for our Apple-a-Month Club subscribers. She'll be reading from the collected short stories in None of this is Real, a beautiful, occasionally unsettling, always profound collection of worlds in which the real and the surreal brush up against each other, turning (or slightly tilting) truth on its head.
Springer is the author of the new novel/memoir The Vicious Red Relic, Love, which weaves a story of something like coming-of-age in the mid 90s Bay Area queer and punk scene, tackling issues of sex work, HIV and identity. Springer, a current professor of literature at UC San Diego, is a former singer in the Bay Area bands Blatz and Cypher in the Snow and touring member of the awesomely raucous spoken word group Sister Spit.
We're thrilled to welcome Springer and Mellis for a reading of their remarkable, incomparable work. [Neither book is listed on our website right now, but give us a call to reserve copies.]

Green Apple Books is proud to be hosting author and swimming enthusiast Lynn Sherr at the South End Rowing Club for a reading, discussion, book signing and all-things-aquatic celebration of her new book Swim.
In Swim, Sherr explores every aspect of the sport, from the biology of swimming to the fame of Esther Williams; from turquoise pools and wild water to the training of Olympians. Swim is a celebration of swimming and the effect it has on our lives. It’s also an inquiry into why we swim—the lure, the hold, the timeless magic of being in the water and a look at how swimming has changed over the millennia.
This event at the landmark South End Rowing Club will be a great night of love for the water for swimmers.

Local author Bart Schneider will be appearing at Green Apple in the Granny Smith Room at 7PM on March 21st to read from his new, locally-based novel, Nameless Dame: Murder on the Russian River. Booklist says: "Schneider’s vision of a world where everyone, high and low, criminal and otherwise, is susceptible to the clarion call of poetry is somewhere between parody and utopia, but either way, it’s utterly delightful." The live version is sure to be even more so.

Join Green Apple Books in celebrating the release of Ian Tuttle's debut short story collection, Stretchyhead, on Wednesday, February 22nd at 7 PM in the Granny Smith Room. One of the recent favorite literary lights of San Francisco's exploding spoken-word culture, Ian's stories are insightful, emotional and poetic - a perfect blend of Richard Brautigan and Raymond Carver. His odes are gathered in the finest of letterpress, and accompanied by minimalist illustrations that seem to leap off of the page. Don't miss this reading, and one day you'll be able to say you saw him when.

Author and Rabbi Michael Lerner will be speaking at St. James Episcopal Church on February 26th about his new book, Embracing Isreal/Palestine. Lerner emphasizes that a new approach to the issue requires giving primacy to love, kindness, and generosity. It calls for challenging the master narratives in both Israel and Palestine as well as the idea that “homeland security” can be achieved through military, political, economic, or media domination. His presentation at St. James at 11:30AM on February 26th is sure to be insightful, inspiring, and thought-provoking.

Julia Flynn Siler (LOST KINGDOM) and Julia Scheeres (A THOUSAND LIVES) at Tosca Cafe
Beginning in January 2012, San Francisco’s Litquake literary festival unveils its revamped monthly Epicenter series, to feature select national and international touring authors in lively conversations at Tosca, the city’s elegant and storied North Beach saloon. The new series is modeled after London’s Shoreditch House Literary Salon, and embraces a similar philosophy to create a theater of ideas between writers and readers. With cocktails and free admission, of course. Epicenter events will be held on the final Tuesday evening of each month, and each conversation will be followed by an audience Q&A. Books will be provided by Green Apple.
Julia Scheeres will be discussing her book A Thousand Lives, which is the story of Jonestown as it has never been told before. New York Times bestselling author Julia Scheeres drew from thousands of recently declassified FBI documents and audiotapes, as well as rare videos and interviews, to piece together an unprecedented and compelling history of the doomed camp, focusing on the people who lived there. Her own experiences at an oppressive reform school in the Dominican Republic, detailed in her unforgettable debut memoir Jesus Land, gave her unusual insight into this story.
We'll see you at Tosca on January 24th for a night of fascinating history, great authors, and tasty cocktails. 21+ only.
